The Lake Ronkonkoma Improvement Group is a grass roots Facebook group that has dedicated themselves to cleaning up Lake Ronkonkoma!
Many of our civic members have volunteered to help and have been there cleaning up along with residents of Brookhaven, Islip, and Smithtown. Elected Officials have also been seen helping to promote the clean up and getting their own hands dirty dragging the garbage out of our lake!
The Ronkonkoma Civic fully supports this movement and will continue to help to keep our voices heard!
A special thank you to Evelyn Vollgraff for starting this movement!

This event began with the mindset that we need to bring our community together, give back, and use our town resources.
The ENTIRE Board and many volunteers worked to make this a success! All three nights were well attended and only positive feedback and comments were heard from all who attended.
We thank our sponsors, our volunteers and the community for making this a huge success!
We have a wonderful community - and our residents are caring, amazing people! Recently, The "Driehm Team" as they affectionately call themselves, were spotted by our President, Bruce Edwards, doing a community service that we just had to mention!
The team consists of Kim Piano (Riehm), her two boys, Mason and Jesse as well as their extended family, all residents of our great town! On a regular basis, this family picks up the trash and keeps Ocean Avenue clean!
They do this in memory of Kim's late husband, Michael Riehm, a great man who was always helping out neighbors and friends! Michael's community spirit lives on through his family and the amazing job they do keeping the town he grew up in beautiful.
Thank you, Kim and the rest of the Riehm's! The Ronkonkoma Civic Appreciates what you do for our town!
Camille Marulli, Member of RCA, attended our May 14, 2015 meeting and afterwards, spoke with President, Bruce Edwards regarding a safety issue on the roads near the Slocum School. Children walking to school from the neighborhood do not have a sidewalk on the Pamlico Avenue side of the school, making it a danger.
Bruce Edwards, Pres and Eileen Panico, VP, Stopped by on the 19th to speak to the principal, Mr. Delio and Camille and took a look at the situation. It looked to be easily remedied and the RCA asked Camille and Mr. Delio to continue gathering signatures on their petition.
On May 27, Bruce and Eileen, met with Trish Bergin, Councilwoman for Islip, and spoke about installing sidewalks and curbs. Ms. Bergin assured the RCA that she would look into it.
Today, June 2nd, the RCA received a call from Gene Murphy, Islip Town Planning Department, told us Ms. Bergin spoke with him about the situation and advised us that he would be sending people to survey the site.
The RCA will keep you updated on the progress as we hear more!
Last night at the Connetquot High School Award Ceremony, the Ronkonkoma Civic association was PROUD to present our second annual scholarship award to samantha Walsh.
Our committee, Augie Abbondanza, Rose Quaranta and Terri McNamee, poured through many anonymous applications and essays. The three of them picked an amazing civic minded essay. The High School then notified us of who that essay belonged to, our own Director's daughter! Congratulations to Samantha Walsh! We wish you well in your future endeavors!
Thank you to the committee, Augie, Rose and Terri, for your time and effort in choosing a recipient. And thank you to Augie and our president, Bruce Edwards for presenting this scholarship on June 1, 2015.
UPDATE: The RCA brokered a deal between Perfume Center of America and the residents behind the building on Ocean Avenue. Perfume of America agreed to plant a double row of Leyland Cypress trees on their property as well as another row of the same on the paper road dividing the homes from the building. The deal was agreed to by all parties including the Town of Islip Planning Board and Appeals Board. We are happy to help our residents and have a good neighbor in Perfume Center of America!

Ronkonkoma Civic Association is currently speaking with to Perfume Center of America, a new building on Ocean Ave.
The residents that are directly behind the building would like to have a buffer between their yards and the building
The RCA will be working with the company and the residents to achieve this goal
The Ronkonkoma Civic Association stepped in to help some residents fix a problem with the way the LIRR Double Track Project contractors have been storing and transporting construction materials. The picture (below) shows what our resident sees as they look out their window. This sand was being stored improperly on Johnson Avenue. As you can see, the sand is much higher than the barrier. Residents on Johnson Avenue, were unable to open their windows due to dust and sand flying in. They tried contacting the LIRR to no avail. Then one resident contacted our VP Bruce Edwards. He immediately called the LIRR and scheduled a meeting. The RCA is happy to report that the following resolutions were made as a direct result of that meeting.:
Yard to be expanded, and a buffer will remain on Johnson Avenue; pile height reduced and moved back towards rear of yard as fill is distributed.
Trucks will no longer use current gate with temporary curb cut. Trucks will use entrance at existing parking lot and entrance at signal shed.
Debris in Street:
Contractor will begin a program of weekly street sweeping of Johnson Avenue.
Contractor to begin weekly program of clearing debris from storm drains on Johnson Avenue.
LIRR to contact Town of Brookhaven to coordinate street repairs as needed.
