Vet's Hwy Corridor Vote

Despite our concerns about making it fast food alley, the TOI voted to allow the zoning to go through without any changes.  Vet's Hwy portion begins around 14:54

No Zone Change for Island Hills

posted Nov 22, 2017, 9:40 AM by Ronkonkoma Civic Association

Last night, 11-22-17, RCA attended the Town Board meeting where residents of the Connetquot and Sayville Communities spoke about the zone change being requested. The RCA supports our neighbors in this endeavor as it will affect our school district and our school taxes.

Vet's Hwy Corridor

posted Nov 20, 2017, 7:28 PM by Ronkonkoma Civic Association   [ updated Nov 20, 2017, 7:30 PM ]

Last Thursday, November 16th, a change to the zoning on Vet's Hwy was discussed. The change in zoning would allow fast food restaurants with drive thru's, more gas stations with convenience stores and more hotels.

The RCA spoke out against those particular changes but we do agree that upscale restaurants should be allowed. Perhaps even a specialty supermarket.

The vote is TUESDAY November 21st at Town Hall in Islip at 6 pm. If you want Vet's Hwy to be full of fast food restaurants, more hotels used as emergency housing and even more gas stations than please sit home and do nothing.

Otherwise we urge our members to attend and speak out against these changes. Urge our Town Board ELECTED Representatives to improve our neighborhood and not allow it to become "fast food and gas alley" (and a haven for more hotels that will become emergency housing.)

No ZONE Change

The Ronkonkoma Civic Association, along with Bohemia Civic and Sayville residents, joined to gather facts and make a plan to help stop a zone change at the old Island Hills Golf and Country club. Milynn Augulis, a Sayville resident spearheaded this movement along with several other residents  and welcomed help from the surrounding communities and hamlets.

With a packed room, Connetquot residents and Sayville residents came together with Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay, who graciously answered questions, his opponent Anthony Piccirillo also attended to show his support. Another supporter, Sam Gonzalez attends and continues to show his support for this community.

RMS Honor Society kids
These kids were SPOTTED by our President, Bruce Edwards - cleaning up Ronkonkoma on their day off from school! We love it! The parents of these children should be extremely proud of the civic-minded, caring children they are raising and the community appreciates their efforts! Thank you also to their RMS advisers and the parent volunteers that helped bring these kids around the neighborhood!

With summer coming to a close too quickly, the Ronkonkoma Civic Association continues to advocate for our community, help our residents, and continue to be involved to keep our sense of community intact.

We can't do this without your help! We rely on our membership to have a voice with our local politicians to continue to improve Ronkonkoma. Please considering joining our civic
(dues are less than a dollar a month!) or renew your membership today!

Our next meeting is less than a month away! Please join us at
Ronkonkoma Middle School on September 14, 2017 @ 7pm in the auditorium.

We are preparing another mailing to ALL Ronkonkoma residents for our "Visioning Project" - Have YOUR voice heard by attending our meetings! Be proactive and not reactive! The Islip side of the HUB WILL be targeted by builders - Let's have our plan in place with what WE want instead of what they tell us we need!

Updates on issues affecting our community (such as crime, zombie homes, graffiti etc.) will be discussed and as always our 4th and 5th precincts will be there to take reports and give updates.

Lakefest 2017 was a huge success this year again! All suggestions for next year's events are appreciated! Please also consider volunteering! A huge THANK YOU to all of our sponsors, volunteers, and attendees!

The Ronkonkoma Chamber is hosting their Annual Street Fair on September 3rd. Our Civic will have a booth there again this year. Please visit us or volunteer to help man the booth!

We are also partnering with Connetquot HS PTSA for their 2nd annual Fall Festival! It's a great way to get some great items for fall, support the High School PTSA with their scholarship fund, and enjoy a great day as a community! Volunteers for this event are also needed!

We hope you all had an enjoyable summer and we look forward to the upcoming year!
